Unexpected Fun

Fri Jun 6, 2008, 10:46 PM
So last Sunday night, I was sitting in a 1966 Plymoth Fury helping my dad work on cars. When all of the sudden my phone rings. I look at the caller idea and it is my friend Courtney. So I answer it just to find that my signal just faded. So I called her back and...a man answered. Heh, definitely not my friend. So I ask, "Who is this?" and the voice says, "This is Dr. Hauser, why aren't you here?" (Dr. Hauser is the trombone professor at Tennessee Tech) So this is the story. During the school year I had plan to go to SCMI(southern chamber music institute) aka a music camp. However, when it was time for me to turn in all my info, I didn't have the cash for it. So I decided not to go. To make a long story short, basically one of the trombonist that planned on going got sick. And I was lucky enough for Dr. Hauser to call me and ask me to come. So that night I packed and then realized what just happened. You know I was leaving for a week in the morning! So anyway I got over my excitement/shock and got packed and got to bed. I woke up early the next morning and with my parents made the long drive. And was at the camp. I got settle in right away and just jumped into the swing of things. Anyhows, I had a blast going! In this short week I improved a lot! I got a lesson and got to try out a lot of different trombones(which was my favorite part, because I got to play a superbone!).Then every night we heard faculty concerts which were amazing. It was just a nice band week. Today we had our final performance and I did very well. I'm finally back home and must say that as fun as this week was, I am very hapy to be back. There's no place like home. So I just wanted to say, if you get an unexpected break, TAKE IT! Offers like this don't come around very often and I have benefited greater and am so happy I did decide to go. Now I got my kick start on my new summer practices. I hope all you other musicians(especially you wind players) aren't slackin! Make sure you are always ready to pick up the horn whenever you may need to! Heh, cause you never know when an instructor, will call and ask what You've been doing!

W00t! I'm definitely not slacking! I'm going to practice all summer to assure 1st chair!
Sounds neat! A trombone camp sounds really neat! Superbones sound really amazing, with their valve-ey slide-ey goodness. Glad to hear you've learned lots of stuff. Unfortunately I've never had a professional flute player work with me before. :(
I'm hoping to get some instruction over the summer.
For summer camps, I've got Jazz Camp planned in August and managed to get a bunch of people signed up.
